Physical Education

Intention (Why do we teach what we teach?)

The aim of physical education at Stoke St. Michael is to provide an extensive range of opportunities to ALL children both in school and out. This also means providing opportunities to take part in extra-curricular activities and competitions. We can identify inactive children and ensure they also have opportunities to increase participation in a range of sports. At Stoke, we believe it is vital to teach the importance of values such as personal challenges, fairness, failure, resilience, respect and teamwork. We deliver high quality PE lessons from detailed session plans that ensure children:

  • Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • Are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • Engage in competitive sports and activities
  • Lead healthy, active lives

The ultimate goal is to prepare students to be active and healthy for a lifetime.

Implementation (How do we teach it?)

PE is taught by a sports coach four days a week, which means each class has access to two PE sessions each week using the scheme Imoves. This scheme provides detailed and structured session plans following curriculum guidelines and also tracking and assessment of skills through fun activities.

Children cover a minimum of 6 sports across an academic year over a two-year timetable to ensure skills are covered in a range of sports in lower and upper school. Some of the sports covered include football, netball, cricket, tennis, dodgeball, basketball, tag rugby, gymnastics, athletics, dance, hockey and rounders.

Years 1,2,3& 4 also attend termly swimming sessions to ensure that children can swim at least 25m using a range of stokes and are able to perform a range of self-rescue scenarios.

Impact (What has been the impact and how do we know?)

The impact of this is the children can:

  • Show coordination, agility, balance and flexibility across a wide range of skills in a variety of different sports
  • Swim at least 25m using a range of strokes by the time they leave Stoke
  • Understand the importance of leading healthy lifestyles
  • Experience a range of emotions participating in sports but are able to understand values such as fairness, resilience, respect, failure and teamwork
  • Have the opportunity to participate in a range of sports during PE lessons, lunch/ afterschool clubs, competitions and events
