Science

Intent

At Stoke St Michael Primary School, we believe that together we are Stoke, together we are proud, and this vision underpins our science curriculum. We aim to inspire curiosity, build confidence and develop a sense of pride in understanding the world around us.

Through the Twinkl Science Scheme, we provide a broad, ambitious and fully inclusive curriculum that ensures all pupils, develop essential scientific knowledge and enquiry skills.

We intend for all pupils to:

  • Develop a secure understanding of key scientific concepts across biology, chemistry, and physics.
  • Apply scientific enquiry skills to explore questions, make predictions, and carry out investigations.
  • Develop the ability to observe, measure, record, and interpret data accurately.
  • Reflect on the impact of science on everyday life and the wider world.
  • Make links between their learning in Science and our school values: being successful, trustworthy, original, kind, and equal.
  • Learn collaboratively, valuing the strengths of our mixed-age community and working together to share ideas.

Our curriculum is carefully designed to ensure full coverage of the National Curriculum through a rolling programme, enabling pupils in mixed key stage classes to revisit and deepen learning over time. It is structured to be accessible to all, with clear progression that supports every learner to succeed and feel valued.

Implementation

Science is taught weekly through the structured and progressive Twinkl Science Scheme, adapted to meet the needs of our mixed-age classes. Lessons combine theory, practical investigation, discussion, and reflection, giving pupils the opportunity to develop knowledge, skills, and scientific thinking.

Teaching and Learning:

  • Lessons are a mix of practical investigations, experiments, observation tasks, discussion, and research activities.
  • Pupils develop scientific enquiry skills alongside knowledge, including predicting, measuring, observing, recording, and interpreting results.
  • Assessment is ongoing and includes practical observations, written work, quizzes, and project tasks to monitor understanding and skills development.
  • Learning is scaffolded to support all pupils, with challenge provided through open-ended investigations, reasoning tasks, and opportunities to apply knowledge in new contexts.

Inclusion and Accessibility:

  • The rolling programme ensures that pupils joining at different points in their primary education can access all aspects of Science.
  • Scaffolding, visual aids, practical demonstrations, and differentiated tasks support all learners.
  • Challenge is provided through open-ended investigations, deeper reasoning questions, and independent research opportunities.

Impact

As a result of our Science curriculum, pupils:

  • Develop a strong understanding of key scientific concepts across biology, chemistry, and physics.
  • Apply enquiry skills to plan and carry out investigations, interpret results, and communicate findings effectively.
  • Show curiosity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills in scientific contexts.
  • Make connections between scientific knowledge and the wider world, demonstrating understanding of its relevance in everyday life.
  • Apply school values in their approach to Science, showing responsibility, originality, and respect for evidence.

By the end of Year 6, pupils are able to:

  • Recall and explain key scientific concepts and processes across biology, chemistry, and physics.
  • Plan and carry out investigations, making predictions, taking accurate measurements, and recording observations systematically.
  • Analyse and interpret data, draw conclusions, and communicate their findings clearly.
  • Demonstrate curiosity, independence, and confidence in applying scientific skills and knowledge to new situations.

The impact of our curriculum is that pupils leave our school with a strong foundation in scientific knowledge and skills, a sense of curiosity and enquiry, and the confidence to continue their learning journey in Science with enthusiasm and resilience.
